De-lamination of wrought iron

Despite the fact that this wrought iron railing panel is less than 100 years old it has been almost completely destroyed by rust which can clearly be seen between the layers of iron causing a very aggressive form of corrosion known as crevice corrosion. Some sections have completely rusted away and others have expanded to many times their original size. This panel had to be replaced and all other panels required extensive restoration and replacement work to bring the railings back to their original appearance. This form of corrosion is not possible with pure iron.
